FUTURES Quietly firm
It was a fairly quiet day on the dollar market, said Mr Alan Overton, futures trader for Mair Astley, Ltd. The February contract changed 200 points — a profit of $lOOO on long positions — reflecting a weakening of the Kiwi dollar. This could be the result of the gloomy predictions by the Institute of Economic Research: the effect may not last but traders should be careful in the next few days. Mr Overton said, "The PCP market had an average sort of a day — prices rose and closed near their highs for the day. Traders appear frustrated in a contract that has not moved much in the last few weeks," he said. “Wool futures were very quiet, with only 17 lots traded. Prices were mixed but tended upwards, trading in a narrow band. If we were to see a dramatic fall in the New Zealand dollar, prices are likely to rocket” Details of yesterday’s trading:
