Shipping News New tug named Purau
The Lyttelton Harbour Board's new tug under consideration will be named Purau. The board made the decision at its monthly meeting yesterday on the commendation of its chairman, Mr G. E. Wright. In a brief* report, Mr Wright said that in 1976 the board had chosen the name, Godley, for a tug that was then under consideration. At the same time various names had been suggested, including Purau. “These names were generally in keeping with the earlier board’s tradtional practice of naming their vessels after the province, port itself, bays, promontories, or features of Banks Peninsula. “Two names were favoured in 1976 for the the new tug, these being Godley and Purau,” he said. A vote taken at the time had favoured the name, Godley, by seven votes to four. The Ministry of Transport Marine Division, had confirmed that the name, Purau, was available, said Mr Wright. The Harbourmaster, Captain J. A. Barbour, told board members that the name was fully distinctive over radio and that he thought it mean “bay of mist,” relating to an area near the port where a mist hangs in certain conditions.
