Good-quality hinds fetch $3000

Good-quality 15-month Red deer hinds sold to $3OOO each at a deer auction in Christchurch this week. A big buying gallery of Canterbury farmers showed a preference for well bred hinds which were presented in top order. Most good hinds sold between $2300 and $2500. Fifty per cent of the yarding of 180 hinds was sold. Unsold hinds were mainly of lighter weights although some good-quality stock failed to meet vendors’ reserves. Lighter hinds sold down to $lBOO. Prices were regarded as pleasing for vendors in spite of the hesitancy in the farming industry resulting from proposed changes to livestock taxation announced recently by the Government. Leading sales included:

A. R. and L. J. Fraser (Waimate), five hinds at $3OOO (81kg average liveweight): Mesopotamia

station (Rangitata Gorge), five hinds at $2900 (76kg); Mount Somers station (Mount Somers), 10 hinds at $2900 (82kg and 83.5 kg); Houhere Deer Park (Peel Forest), five hinds at $2BOO (82.5 kg
