G.P.s’ nurses get award
PA Wellington Nurses in doctors’ surgeries now have their own award. The Medical Practitioners Practice Nurses’ Award was.the result of two days of negotiation between the nurses’ union and the employers’ body. The nurses’ union advocate, Mr Neville Taylor, said attempts to achieve this had spanned 12 years and the union was delighted that this group of nurses would finally have the protection and rights associated with an industrial award.
The employers’ advocate, Miss Jacinta Ward, said the introduction of the award would ensure that a minimum set of conditions of employment was established for medical practitioners. This would benefit both employers and nurses. Wage rates for the new grouping have been set in line with the recently negotiated rates applying to staff nurses in public hospitals. This reflects the payment to most doctors of a 100 per cent subsidy from the Health Department for the employment of practice nurses.
