Government talks on Singapore Airlines’ application to fly a weekly service to Christchurch
will be held in mid-April. This was confirmed by the New Zealand manager of the airline, Mr David Lee, at a Chinese dinner to mark the Year of the Tiger in Christchurch last evening. Mr Lee said that in view of the steady growth in traffic between Singapore and New Zealand, he was confident that approval would be granted. Singapore Airlines at present flies twice a week between Singapore and Auckland. The proposed new service would fly from Singapore to Christchurch direct, and then back to Singapore via Auckland. The first flight could start later this year. Singapore Airlines, which has the most modern fleet of jet aircraft in the world — 20 Boeing 7475, including 11 “Big Tops,” six Airbus A3oos and four 8757 s — now serves 47 cities in 34 countries.
