Leyland Cap, NZI Life in goat venture
PA Wellington Leyland Capital and NZI Life have each taken a quarter of a new SBM King Country cashmere goat farming venture. Mr Robert Hall, a farmer and businessman, runs a cashmere stud where selection progeny recording has been carried out for the last two years and an elite herd has been established. Mr Hall will own 50 per cent of the company. “To have major corporate financial backing and expertise proves that the goat-fibre industry has
come of age,” he said. Studs are now being developed at Taumarunui, where there are 3000 cashmere goats, and at the Kinross Stud at Te Kauwhata which has been purchased by the venture. The Almaree Angora Stud from Perth, whose goats have been pure bred for some 25 years, will be located there. A cashgora stud will be established to take advantage of the superior bloodlines from Almaree and the existing cashmere stud to breed and provide the new fibre, cashgora. The chairman of Leyland Capital, Mr John Strevens, said: “We are delighted to be associated with Robert Hall in this venture. This investment provides the opportunity for Leyland Capital to be involved in substantial goat breeding. “Our objective is to produce top-quality breeding stock for the rapidly-de-veloping goat industry.”
One of Australia’s leading goat experts, Mr Fred Moylen will be on the board of the new company. He is the managing director of Kinross Cashmere Company, Ltd, the Australian subsidiary of Dawsons, the world’s largest processor -of cashmere fleece. The venture follows closely a public float by Cashmere Pacific, Ltd, which intends to raise S3M to finance a purely cashmere producing stud in the hills behind Wellington.
