P.M.’s assurance

The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, has assured the Federation of Labour that he will study its proposal for a meat industry summit.

The president of the F.0.L., Mr Jim Knox, led a delegation including the secretary of the Meat Workers’ Union, Mr A. J. Kennedy, to see Mr Lange yesterday.

Mr Knox said they expected him to come back with a response before theh F.O.L’s disputes action committee met on Thursday to discuss developments in the freezing works pay dispute.

Should the conference go ahead, Mr Knox said he would expect it to deal with the workers’ current 15.5 per cent wage claim, among other things.

The parties invited would include Federated Farmers, meat companies, and the meat unions.
