AUSTRALIA Market regains strength

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer in subdued trading with the market taking stock after Friday’s gains and little news to stimulate trading, brokers said.

Near the close of trading, the all ordinaries index had risen 1.3 points to 1048.4 and the all industrials 7.0 to 1606.2. The all resources shed 2.7 to 621.5 and the gold index fell 3.5 to 878.0.

Turnover was 43.7 M shares worth $63.6M, with falls outnumbering rises by 230 to 219.

BHP' traded moderately ahead of the release of Bell Resources Part A take-over statement, with about 600,000 shares crossed. The shares closed 4c down at 702.

Bell Resources remained steady on 480. Its parent, Bell Group, gained 10c to 660, and CSR lost 4c to 333.

Mining stocks traded mixed, with MIM down 17c to 255 on rumours of a new issue from the company and Western Mining off 2c to 338. North Brokeen Hill put on 6c to 258 and Peko Wallsend 10c to 520.

Gold-related stocks were also mixed, with Kidston off 20c to 520, Poseidon down 15c to 220 and GMK and Renison both up 10c to 800 and 520 respectively. In the oil and gas sector, Santos lost 1c to 454, Ampol Exploration 5c to 185 and Magellan 5c to 170. Strong trading in Pioneer Concrete was the highlight of

the industrial board. About 2.7 M shares were traded, the bulk of them in special sales at 270, and the stock closed 5c up at 265 after reaching a year’s low of 255. Elsewhere, News Corporation gained 30c to 1220, Lend Lease 14c to 664, Arnotts 10c to 360 and Bond Corporation 5c to 237. Coles Myer fell 3c to 437, Boral 2c to 338 and Unity Corporation, which plans to take over APA Holdings, 30c to 550. Major banking stocks traded in a narrow range, with the ANZ improving 2c to 472, Westpac remaining steady on 455 and the National Australia' losing 1c to 463. In share price index futures, active March opened six points firmer at 1055.0 and traded down to close at 1052.0.
