Top centres fail

Canterbury’s chances of winning the Rothmans inter-centre bowls tournament this year has been made a little brighter by the failure of two of the main centres, Auckland and Dunedin, to get past the qualifying rounds. Dunedin, the winner last year and the most successful centre in the event, was surprisingly beaten by South Otago in the zone six elimination. Counties repeated its performance of last year in beating Auckland in the zone one elimination.

However, Counties had the good fortune to be in front when rain washed out play after only two of the five rounds.

Taranaki is the likely favourite. It won 11 of its 15 games in taking the zone three elimination, and this was against strong rivals in Manawatu and Wellington.

The finalists for the play-offs to be held at the Woolston W.M.C. on March 1 and 2 are Counties, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Nelson, Canterbury and South Otago.
