Canoe’s future in doubt
PA Auckland The future of the voyaging canoe Hawaiki Nui is in doubt. The canoe was scheduled to be shipped back to Tahiti later this week, but members of the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union have agreed not to load it.
The union’s president, Mr Dai Martin, said the workers had been asked by Maori elders at Orakei Marae not to load the canoe.
Members of the Maori community, and other people upset about the canoe returning to Tahiti, will meet later this week to discuss the situation. The Hawaiki Nui has'
been in Auckland for three weeks after completing a voyage retracing the migration of the Maori people to New Zealand.
It was built in Tahiti from two totara logs felled in the Whirinaki Forest. Its construction was paid for by the Government of French Polynesia.
