Profits from the land
Sir, — Rightly conservationists oppose the despoliation of our rivers and bush by commercial interests. Why then do they not protest against the quiet erosion of our greatest national asset — the land? Because it does not fit in with current economic theories , it is allowed to fall into the hands of agribusiness — Hereford Street farmers or multi-national companies, whose main aim is to wring as much quick profit as possible out of the land in the short term and to hell with it in the long run. Sir James Stewart is one who has the vision to see that land conservation must come first and market and social theories second. But the most the average New Zealander knows about the land is that all farmers own race-horses and flash cars. — Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON. January 24, 1986.
