Meat workers’ wage claims
Sir,—The recent comments by Mr "Blue” Kennedy concerning meat workers' wage claims show the gulf that exists between reality and the traditional attitude of trade unions. He says the workers’ bottom line increase is 15.5 per cent He has obviously not been listening to Government, spokesmen when they have been talking about the importance of receiving the correct market signals. This means that this year my income from meat will fall 40 per cent so I am producing more wool and pine trees instead. I suggest to Mr Kennedy that market signals should apply just the same to his members. These will show clearly that a workforce trimmed by at least 30 per cent using new technology and working a longer season is the only way this inefficient processing industry will survive. Farmers are being exhorted to produce products which are sael-
able and profitable — why should the meat workers be any different with their labour? — Yours, etc., ,
