$11,250 for top buck

Angora two-tooth bucks, whose fleeces had been tested for micron size and medullation, averaged $3,302 at the first annual sale of Lands Canterbury Angoras in Christchurch yesterday. The yarding of 76 bucks and does was offered on behalf of the Lands and Survey Department and grossed $170,000.

Prices were described as being on a par with those at the national Angora sale at Hamilton earlier this month.

Although Angora prices have not reached the heights of last season’s, demand for good quality animals has been steady and buyers have become more selective.

m< ion oi .4 per cent The buck attracted the most spirited bidding of the day, and was bought by the Anton Angora Partnership, of West Melton.

This buck’s twin brother (30.1 microns and 2.8 per cent medullation) sold at $2400, highlighting the selectiveness of buyers. Twentythree other fibre-tested registered two-tooth bucks sold between $l2OO and $7600. Last year, Lands Canterbury sold five bucks at a Christchurch Angora auction between $16,500 and $19,000. The second run of registered two-tooth bucks, which were not fibre tested, averaged $971 for 14 goats. Three were passed at auction. Nineteen maiden registered two-tooth does averaged $2668 and included a top price of $6700. Other prices ranged from $l5OO to $3600.

Mixed-age registered Angora does made from $9OO to $3200 and averaged $1854. Four G 1 mixed-age does sold from $6OO to $lOOO.
