Hibbs breaks swimming record
Dallas Hibbs (New Brighton Hertz) provided a brief highlight at an otherwise mediocre opening to the 1986 Canterbury swimming championships when the first session was held at Queen Elizabeth II Park last night. 1 Competing in the boys 13 years 100 m freestyle Hibbs twice , broke his own Canterbury record — the first time, in his heat, and again in the final. He had set the old record of Imin 2.24 s only last month. In the heat, Hibbs reduced the time to Imin 2.11 s and in the final to Imin 1.625. His clubmate, Joseph Ward, also recorded a smart time —, Imin 2.25 s — in the final just outside : the old record.
Only two open titles were decided last evening — the men’s and women’s 400 m freestyle. Duncan Doig (Wharenui) retained the men’s title and Tania Rahurahu (Wharenui) won the women’s race easily. Linda Robinson (Wharenui) won the girls 14 years 200 m individual medley after a gritty solo swim. Her time of 2min 29.76 s was an indication that she will be making a strong assault on Commonwealth Games qualifying times as the season progresses. Results were: MEN Open 400 m freestyle: D.
