The best beaten

PA Auckland The local girl, Leanne Chambers, took on the best riders in the world yesterday to win the main competition on the first day of the international show jumping festival at Waiuku.

Chambers (Pukekohe), riding Emma Jane for the Pimms team, scored her second major win in a week when she took the international show jumping derby, having won the Auckland provincial championship last Sunday. Only five went clear in the first round over the English designer, Pamela Carruthers’ long course, which featured several permanent obstacles. Emma Jane set a tough target for the other four, and the only one that came near it was Claire Honeywell (Southland) and Buckingham who also went clear but two seconds slower for second place. Vaughn Jeffries (Waikato), on Hunters Run, was third, trying just too hard at the second-last fence and standing too far back to take a brick off.

The best of the international stars was the Canadian, Mark Laskin, who rode the Naturally New Zealand team’s RBpce

d’Oro into fourth place. The ANZ Bank novice championship went to a horse that two years ago was under the shadow of death; Hitchhiker, a 6-year-old thoroughbred almost severed a hind tendon on a broken bottle. His owner, Kay Meacham (Howick), nursed him for 18 months. Results:— Greggs International Derby: L. Chambers (Auckland), Pimms Team’s Emma Jane, 1; C. Honeywell (Southland), Buckingham, 2; V. Jeffries (Waikato), Hunters Run, 3. ANZ novice champion of champions: V. Jeffries, riding Kay Meacham’s Hitchhiker, 1; R. Diederich (Wairarapa), Waikohe, 2; L. Chambers, Diamond Seeker, 3.

Open pony derby: L. Cropp (Waikato), Daniel, 1; N. Cooper (Taranaki), Glanville Road,’ 2; J. Taylor (Waikato), Kizzy, 3.
