25,000 shield letters

NZPA-AP Richmond, Virginia The United States Bankruptcy Court has received nearly 25,000 letters from potential Daikon Shield claimants in the United States, Europe and Australia. An average of 3000 letters and cards a day had arrived at a special post office box since the A.H. Robins Company began a campaign advising women who used the intra-uterine device (1.U.D.) of the deadline for filing claims against the company, said the Court clerk, Michael Sheppard. Mr Sheppard said the

Court had begun receiving claims from Australia, New Zealand, and Norway, and expected more as Robins’ foreign advertising campaign continued. Suits have charged that the device has caused pelvic inflammatory disease, sterility, and in some cases, death. Robins maintains the Daikon Shield was no more likely to cause injury than any other I.U.D. At the time of the bankruptcy filing, Robins and its insurer had paid out SUSS2O million ($976.30 million) to resolve 9500 claims. An additional 6000 suits were pending.
