Fishing boat safe

PA Invercargill A fishing boat that sent out a Mayday call after hitting rocks off Dusky Sound, in Fiordland, was yesterday sailing safely off the Southland coast, said the Invercargill police. A Mayday call from the Tainui was picked up by Awarua Radio at about 1 a.m., said Senior-Sergeant Paul Brown.

The police began preparations for a search and rescue, and put a helicopter on standby in Te Ariau. However, another radio signal was picked up about 3 a.m. that the boat was back in the sound. The Tainui had taken on some water. Sergeant Brown said that all aboard were safe, and that the boat required no further assistance.
