One ball to spare
PA Auckland Mark Greatbatch, a cen-tury-maker in the first innings, scored a cracking 88 not out yesterday to steer Auckland to victory over Central Districts with one ball to spare. Auckland, set 228 runs in 100 minutes and 20 overs to win, seemed to have spoiled its chances of a win after a slow start. Some ordinary running between the wickets by the Aucklanders pointed to a draw. Greatbatch, who deservedly won the man-of-the-match award for his double of 119 not out and yesterday’s blazing 88 not out, had other ideas, however. Earlier, Auckland’s captain, Peter Webb, had offered Central some easy runs after its rather slow
beginning to its second innings, enriched only by John Smith’s impeccable 70. Webb bowled his slowlooking off-spinners and the Central batsmen, Scott Briasco, Richard Hayward and David Guthardt, got themselves out trying to punish Webb and his fellow spinner Alan Hunt.
