Gray destroys Canterbury

PA Wellington Evan Gray headed a fighting Wellington effort to beat Canterbury by 70 runs in their Shell Trophy cricket match which ended at Lower Hutt yesterday.

Canterbury, which led by 19 runs on the first innings, rattled through Wellington again yesterday to have it all out for 222 and was left with a target of 204 in even time to take outright points. Though again starting well, but with a rearranged batting order, Canterbury sought victory without appearing to consider settling for anything less, and was all out for 133.

Gray, who took six for 114 in Canterbury’s first innings, again produced the goods, taking eight for 37 for career-best figures. Two of his victims were caught in the deep by an injured Fred Beyeler, who managed only three unsuccessful overs with his faster bowling. Beyeler had earlier belted a refreshing, needy innings of 30 for Wellington, helping it from an awful post-lunch collapse with three sixes and three fours from 33 balls. His innings provided a huge psychological block for Canterbury, whose chase was made so much the harder by his late flurry. Wellington carried on

briskly from its overnight 86 for one, with Justin Boyle going on to a five-boundary 56 and the captain, Robert Vance, chasing runs for a bright 47. Andrew Jones looked crisp in his 33 but from there, Beyeler apart, Wellington looked thin and even unworthy of winning. It had twice been blown apart in the later order, for in the first innings it lost its last six wickets for only 49 runs in 35 minutes. With six for 53 to go with his first innings one for 63, Canterbury’s captain and off-spinner, Vaughan Brown, took for the fourth time in his career an innings haul of five wickets or more.
