FRIDAY Greymouth ZARA’S STAR (Race 9), b m, 4 years, by Watelse—Star Shadow; trained at Riccarton by T. W. Laylor. Highly promising mare which should be untroubled to add to her impressive record today. Waikato SPANKER ON (Race 7), b g, 6 years, by Gaines Minbar— Derry Al; trained at Drury by P. T. Wolfenden. In top form at present and sure to start at prohibitive odds tonight, despite an awkward barrier draw. SATURDAY Franklin AZAPAL (Race 7), b g, 6 years, by Azemann—Summer Gold; trained at Cambridge by A. L. Jones. In outstanding form and going for sixth win in succession tomorrow. Nicely drawn and well weighted. Invercargill SPRINGFIELD COUNTESS (Race 6), b m 4 years, by Alba Counsel—Zadios; trained at Winton by G. A. Gibson-Smith. A brilliant double winner on the course at the Christmas meeting, she has the conditions of the race in her favour here being the only C 5 runner in the field and should make the most of a handy barrier draw. Timaru FRANGELICO (Race 7), br m, 4 years, by Golden FullaKara Kara; trained at Kerrytown by R. J. Brosnan. Could not have been any more, impressive than she was in overcoming an early check to win stylishly by four and a half lengths in a 2min 5.5 s rate for 2700 m on the first day. Only bad luck, it would seem, will stop her completing a double for the meeting. Wellington ABIT LEICA (Race 4), ch g, 5 years, by Ashabit—Leica Lite; trained at Stratford by W. Dymond. Win in corresponding race Woodville, January 11, was easy for him. Seems likely to dominate betting in a field lacking in weight-for-age performers.
