Reaction to food price fall

PA Wellington The 0.6 per cent average drop in the food price index for December shows the lifting of subsidies is now filtering through to consumers, says the Consumers’ Institute. The assistant director, David Russell, said the figures were predictable for this time of the year and showed a continuing trend. The biggest contributors to the drop were fresh fruit and vegetables and processed fruit and vegetables, he said. c ; “It is nice to see some flow-on effect to consumers of the lower prices that farmers are getting for meat. That is bad news for farmers but good news for consumers,” he said. Fish prices were also starting to go down. He believed price increases now were going to be a reflection of the true economic state rather than artificial props.
