Row halts repairs to port crane

Repairs to Lyttelton’s damaged container crane have been delayed by an industrial dispute, with about two days work .remaining. Riggers employed by a sub-contractor have stopped work on the crane. They want a site allowance. The acting general manager of the Lyttelton Harbour Board, Mr Peter Morgan, said yesterday that the board hoped the dispute would be settled soon. However, he said that the matter was between the riggers and the sub-contrac-tor.

The dispute, which has simmered for several weeks, is causing little inconvenience at the port because the temporary replacement Samba crane is still working. An extension of the lease on the Samba crane has not been needed. Mr Morgan said that the board hoped a settlement would be reached by the end of the month. The reconstruction of the portainer crane has continued since it was wrecked in a freak berthing accident in February last year. The Samba crane, which

is leased from a British company, plight remain in New Zealand longer than planned. Mr Morgan said that the Auckland Harbour Board was interested in leasing the crane to work at a multi-lift berth. The Auckland board has applied to the Ports Authority for permission to do this. If the application is approved, the Samba crane will be carried to Auckland on a special heavy-lift ship.
