Top field of fliers

A top class international field of model aircraft fliers has been attracted to the first Pacific Free Flight Championships, to be held at Carterton, Wairarapa, during the first week-end in February. Free flight model aircraft competition has a limited following in New Zealand, but there has always been a group of keen fliers who pursue the sport with great dedication and have achieved considerable suc-

cess overseas. Competition will be over three days in the three international classes — FIA glider, FIB rubber powered, and FIC engine powered. In the glider class the Australian team will be led by Vin Morgan, who is ranked fourth in the world, but Morgan will face stiff competition from the New Zealand record holder, Rod Lewis, and the Englishman, Mark Gregorie. The three times New Zea-

land champion, Alan Barnes, should be hard to beat in FIB. The organisers are keenly awaiting confirmation of a team from China. Through a combination of natural talent and strong Government support, the Chinese have built up a group of young model aircraft fliers who are unequalled even in the Soviet Union. An appearance by them at Carterton would be a coup for the sport in New Zealand.
