Aggressive batting pays off for Canty

Aggressive lower-order batting turned an interesting contest for first innings points into a big lead for Canterbury on the second day of its National second Xi’s cricket championship match against Wellington B in Christchurch yesterday. When Canterbury B’s eighth wicket fell the team enjoyed a lead over Wellington of only 19 runs, but by stumps that had been extended by another 130.

The main reason was a magnificent hard-hitting 127 not out by the No. 7 batsman, Chris Flanagan, who has yet to score a century in senior club cricket.

Flanagan, one of Canterbury B’s opening bowlers, laid weighty claims to the status of an all-rounder with shots all round the wicket. The left-hander was never afraid to loft the ball and he went completely on the attack after reaching his 50 in lOOmin. Just 31min later Flanagan, taking particular toll of the medium-pace bowling of Stu Cater, had reached three figures. His century included 15 fours and two sixes.

Flanagan was associated with a fine ninth wicket partnership with Andrew Hintz which realised 102 runs in a rollicking 66min. Earlier the Canterbury B captain, Bob Carter, as the senior partner, had com-

bined with Flanagan in a sixth wicket stand which put on 56 runs to take the team one run past Wellington B’s first innings total of 192. Carter’s highly useful 45 in 91min included some lovely cuts. Including the fall of that wicket the new ball brought about a minor collapse with the young Jonathan Millmow and David Molony capturing three wickets for 18 runs before Flanagan cut loose. The innings was given a very solid start by the opening batsman, David Boyle, who was fifth out for 64, an innings that lasted just over four hours and a quarter. Scores:— CANTERBURY B v.
