Greatbatch praises Briasco’s honesty
PA Auckland A sportsman-like gesture by Scott Briasco, of Central Districts, allowed Aucklander Mark Greatbatch to turn a duck into a maiden first-class century yesterday. Greatbatch was undefeated on 119 when Auckland declared its first innings closed on the second day of their Shell Trophy match at Eden Park. Had it not been for Briasco’s honesty, however, Greatbatch would have been out for a duck. The fast bowler, Derek Stirling, had trapped Trevor Franklin, and in the same over Greatbatch got a nick. The ball flew to Briasco at second slip and after an appeal, Greatbatch was adjudged out. Briasco then signalled that the ball had bounced.
“It was great,” said the 23-year-old Greatbatch after a century that was both powerful and patient and which was the main factor in helping Auckland to a first innings lead. “He (Briasco) did not have to do that. I know, because I have been out twice before to bump balls in first-class cricket, so I appreciate what happened.” CENTRAL DISTRICTS First innings R. Hart c Troup b Morrison 56 J.
