A Christchurch motorcycle racer, Dave Moore, with the exotic MBA Morbideili which helped him win the first stage of the national 125 cc championship series in Timaru last Sunday.
The Italian-made machine is the only one of its kind in New Zealand and its top
speed is 16km/h faster than any other available here. It was a race against time to get the necessary parts for the Morbidelli, which Moore was restoring after buying it in mangled form from Australia. Moore was at another disadvantage — it was his first meeting for 12 months
and he had not previously ridden a Morbidelli. At the last minute, the motor and brake parts arrived from overseas and he drove immediately to Timaru, where he and another mechanic, Martin van Booma, worked through the night to have the motorcycle ready for the first day
of the meeting. Moore, who has previously won the New Zealand 125 cc TT title and finished runner-up in the New Zealand 125 cc championships, says he is “really keen” to win the national series before he leaves for the Australian Grand Prix at Bathurst at Easter.
