Swim coach fears losing half team
NZPA-AAP Brisbane The Olympic Australian head swimming coach, Mr Bill Sweetenham, expects to lose half the current Australian team to a rebel visit to South Africa this year. The “Brisbane Courier Mail” yesterday quoted Mr Sweetenham at the Queensland swimming titles as saying: “By the time the world championships (in Madrid in August) are over, there probably will only be
half the Australian team left.” The South African Amateur Swimming Association president, Mr Issy Kramer, said recently that he would attend the world titles, and hoped to sign up Australians to compete in South Africa. “I have to assume the worst,” Mr Sweetenham said, adding that he had contingency plans under way for replacements in case of a succcessful raid by Mr Kramer.
