Argentinian tour ‘boosts relations’
PA Dunedin Last year’s All Black tour of Argentina boosted relations between that country and New Zealand, an Otago University historian, Dr Tom Brooking, said in Dunedin yesterday. The rugby tour helped overcome any bitterness that might have remained after the Falklands War, he said. Dr Brooking, who teaches Latin American history at the university, recently returned from a month in
South America. “The rugby tour was quite a talking point and the fact the Argentinians drew the second and final test was a big help,” he said. During the Falklands War relations between New Zealand and Argentina were cut off for 18 months and the air link was severed. He said many Argentinians knew of New Zealand’s role in the Falklands but did not hold it against the country. “There is no remaining bitterness,” he said.
