Douglas heads Lasers

PA Tauranga A Mairangi Bay, Auckland, helmsman, Phillip Douglas, maintained his hold on the national Laser yachting championship at Tauranga yesterday. His closest rival after four races in the series is Mark Oliver, of Papatoetoe. The two have dominated the fleet during the first two days of the seven-race regatta being sailed off Mount Maunganui. Douglas has 3.5 penalty points from two wins and a second placing. Oliver has a 75 penalty points and in third Howick’s Rohan Lord has 13.

Sailing conditions were again perfect yesterday with an eight-knot breeze for the morning race which built to 18 knots.

Today is a lay day for the 57-strong fleet with two more heats scheduled tomorrow and the seventh and final race on Friday.
