Canty B comfortable

Canterbury B, already assured of the national second Xis cricket championship, could feel well satisfied with its position at stumps yesterday on the first day of its match against the other unbeaten side, Wellington B. Two profitable partnerships enabled Wellington B to reach 190 before Chris Flanagan and Andrew Hintz removed the tail with the second new ball. Canterbury B had reached 36 for no loss in the 78 minutes before stumps. Although the outfield was very slow and few balls crossed the boundary, the pitch has held few terrors for the batsmen, although the Wellington players and the Canterbury openers, the in-form David Boyle and Kevin Congdon, batted with considerable caution. A similar approach is likely to be adopted today as Canterbury B which, as with Wellington, has not been headed on the first innings in its previous four matches, works towards first innings points. Canterbury had Wellington in early bother, at 53 runs for the loss of four wickets, but Mark Warner and Derek Perry slowly, but surely, gave the total respectability with a fifthwicket partnership of 72. Perry, in partnership with Jonathan Millmow, added 43

for the seventh wicket, but Canterbury should have dismissed Wellington in the second session. Four catches were dropped and three of them should have been taken. Andrew Nuttall had his usual long and economical spell and his fellow left-arm spinner, Mark Priest, and the medium-paced Flanagan gave good support. Hintz, however, was the main thrust of the attack. Replacing Steve Bateman, out through business commitments, the youthful Hintz claimed five wickets and was on a hat-trick at one point.
