Master Mood going for notable double tonight

Special correspondent Wellington Master Mood looks set to emulate the feat of Premiership 12 months ago in completing the Edward Lumley-Wellington Cup double.

The $20,000 Wellington Cup, to be run at Hutt Park this evening, has drawn a field of nine runners. The Blenheim-trained Soxygen has been scratched because of soreness. Master Mood looks certain to start favourite after his fine effort to win the Lumley on Saturday night. He was parked out for most of the 2400 m journey and won too well to offer any excuses for the opposition. Luck in the running is sure to play a major part in the outcome of this evening’s race. Master Mood did not fare well in the barrier draw at No. 8, the outside of the front row. But the 2900 m starting point, at the top of the home straight, often favours horses drawn out.

Gene Evander was slightly disappointing when fourth on the first night. He was finishing only fairly in the straight after being placed three back on the inner all the way. Gene Evander’s form leading up to Wellington was first-class and he must be considered a top chance.

The newcomer, Loveridge, another of the many very good four-year-olds in commission, has looked very smart on occasions and

has been racing consistently well lately. He will have the services of Richard Brosnan, who has already won two Wellington Cups, behind Bonnie’s Chance and Sweet Jessica. A couple of improvers from the first night are expected to be Greg Patron and Metal Mickey. Both got well back in the field on Saturday and had little chance to make up ground. Pixanover and Luxury

Liner cannot be discounted, either, after filling the places behind Master Mood on Saturday. Luxury Liner made all the pace and fought on well. Pixanover enjoyed the run of the race on the first night and finished on strongly for his second after being held up a little on the turn. The double will be completed on the Benson and Hedges Mobile Pace in

which Adover Star could take some beating. A consistent performer, he won on the track last month and produced a good fourth from the 40m mark at New Plymouth last Friday. American Style impressed when winning on Saturday and should be tough again, though he has drawn the second row, while Otama Lass and Onias are other sound prospects.
