AUSTRALIA Market reacts to report

PA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easier as the market reacted to worse-than-expected balance of payments figures and with gold stocks wiping out Monday’s gains. At the close of trading the all-ordinaries index had fallen 2.2 points to 1048.9, but. the allindustrials index rose 0.1 point to a record 1546.9. The allresources index lost 3.7 points to 664.4, while the gold index dropped 31.7 points to 954.1. Turnover was 48M sharesworth S7IM, with falls outnumbering rises by 223 to 210. Brokers said a late rally in industrial stocks following earlier profit-taking had propped the market up. About 600,000 BHP shares were traded and the stock fell 2c to 894. Among other market leaders, CSR remained steady on 370 while Bell Resources lost 6c to 580.

After recent strong gains, the mining sector was down across the board, with MIM the exception, adding 2c to 295. CRA lost 12c to 582, Western Mining 2c to 360 and Elders 4c to 116.

Gold stocks tumbled, with Central Norseman losing 30c to 720, GMK the same to 900 and Kidston 20c to 560.

The easier tone flowed to the oil and gas sector, with Santos off 6c to 536, Woodside down 5c to 115, Ampul Exploration off 2c to 260 and Bridge Oil up 2c to 222. lEL provided the main interest on the industrial board, adding 46c to 744. A related company, Brierley Investments, lost 10c to 534. A comparatively light 450,000 Pioneer Concrete shares were traded with the price remaining at 270. Arnotts added 15c to 350, Lend Lease 10c to 630, ICI 7c to 240 and James Hardie 3c to 328. Brambles lost 10c to 450.
