‘Umpires obstruct’
The former West Indian and New. Zealand wicket-keeper, Simpson Guillen, is concerned over umpires unconsciously obstructing fieldsmen in first class cricket.
Many umpires, he claims, incorrectly move to the same side of the wicket on which the ball is played, thereby impeding the fieldsman returning the ball to the bowler’s end and also exposing himself to injury. “It is noticeable that the umpire keeps looking over his shoulder in readiness for a quick retreat,” he said. The solution is simple, according to Mr Guillen. A scoring shot to the off side means the umpire should move to the on, and vice versa. Mr Guillen said he discussed the matter with a current test umpire who, he said, agreed with him, but added that umpires were instructed to act this way by officials. However, this was denied by the executive director of the New Zealand Cricket Council, Mr Graham Dowling.
