Smee v. Kiwis at Glen

Christchurch Speedway enthusiasts will be able to see one of Australia’s top super saloon drivers in action at Woodford Glen this Friday evening. Gordon Smee will drive a

Pontiac Trans Am in the Australasian super saloon invitation meeting against some of New Zealand’s top drivers. Smee was the 1983/84 Australian super saloon champion and has captained the Australian team in test matches against the United States. With extensive experience driving factoiy cars in America, Smee will prove a tough test of the local opposition at Woodford

Glen on Friday. The new national champion, Peter Sloman of Wanganui, will drive his Corvette Stingray, one of only two such cars in New Zealand. Sloman will be eager to prove to the Christchurch audience that his win in the New Zealand' championships, run under controversial circumstances in Auckland, was no fluke.

Another Wanganui driver, Ray Purdie, and Mick Quinn, from Palmerston North will drive late model Chevrolet Camaros.

The former champion Tony Cardwell, and Doug Smith, both of Christchurch, will be eager to show well on their home circuit, while Peter Woods from Gore is always hard to beat in his Commodore.
