Bird tally up 33%

By

LES BLOXHAM,

travel editor

Pilots using Christchurch Airport have officially reported 14 bird strikes and 85 near misses over the last six months. The total, 99, represents a 33 per cent Increase over the figure for the corresponding period in 1984. Statistics provided yesterday by the Civil Aviation Division of the Ministry of Transport in Wellington show that Christchurch still has more bird-hazard incidents than any other airport in New Zealand. Auckland, New Zealand’s biggest international airport, had only 13 incidents — six strikes and seven near misses — during the second half of last year, a decrease of 35 per cent on the 1984 figure. The nation’s other international airport, at Wellington, was not too far behind Christchurch with 15 strikes and 79 near misses, up 30 per cent. The figures cover the period from July to the end of December. Air New Zealand’s 8747 bird-strike emergency at Giristchurch happened on July 29.
