Classic Ace likely at Avondale today

Special correspondent Auckland Classic Ace and Blue Kingdom give Takanini stables a chance of the double at the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting today. Both are good three-year-olds, Classic Ace, a filly whose' wonderful consistency has her running second, just two points behind Imperial Angel, on the table for Wrightson Bloodstock’s “Filly of the Year” competition. In her last attempt Classic Ace beat all except Royal Heights in the 1600 m Ladies’ Mile at Ellerslie on January 2. The 2200 m of today’s class-three Avondale Motor Hotel Handicap will give her the opportunity to show whether she can stay and, perhaps, be a prospect for the New Zealand Oaks, over 2400, at Trentham next Monday. Argonaut Style, Inner Force and Rumour are among the horses Classic Ace has to beat and as she will be called on to give all three weight — and as much as 4.5 kg — she does not have an easy task. A three-year-old colt, Arogonaut Style showed some promise of becoming a stayer when he won a 2000 m at Thames on January 4. Rumour, a four-year-old mare, took a class-four 2000 m at Ellerslie during the holidays and Inner Force is unlucky, through his disqualification at Avondale last Saturday, not to claim a last-start middle-
