Average up 20 p.c. at Waikato sale

PA Hamilton Without providing a new record price, the opening day of Wrightson Bloodstock’s twentieth annual yearling sale at Claudelands, set the scene for the most successful ever Waikato yearling auction. With the average price up about 20 per cent and the aggregate increased by more than SIM from last year, the majority of vendors and the auctioneers were well pleased. Buyers yesterday spent $3,716,000 on 206 of the 251 lots offered. The 45 lots passed in were perhaps a lesser figure than anyone had expected. The average price was $18,038. On the corresponding day last year, 187 lots sold fetched $2,683,750, the average price being $14,275.

“We are delighted with the outcome of the sales. There is no reason why the trend won’t continue,” Wrightson Bloodstock’s general manager, Mr Michael Floyd, said.

The top price yesterday was $lOO,OOO ($25,000 short of the Claudelands record), paid by the Rosehill trainer, Paul Sutherland, for a bay or brown colt by Musical

Phantasy from Ina Bahroo.

The colt is a half-brother to the outstanding three-year-old of the 1983-84 season, I’m Henry (by Entrepreneur), which outstripped his classic rivals with wins in the New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie, the Wellington Derby at Trentham and the Avondale, Great Northern and Waikato Guineas. The colt is from the second crop of his sire, the American-bred Musical Phantasy (by Sham), which stands at Millfield Stud, Matamata.

His dam, a non-Stud Book mare, is by the Tudor Minstrel line stallion Bahroona, damsire as well of the freakish sprinter High Regards (by Trie Trac).

Millfield Stud prepared the colt for Les Fisher, of Pukekohe, who died just a few days ago.

Second-top price was the $BO,OOO outlaid by Clark Bevins Bloodstock of Hamilton for a grey colt by One Pound Sterling from Latin Vale (by Latin Lover). He is from a top-class Australian family that has produced the Goglio and Gosh (the sire of Galeen).

Bloodstock, Ltd. Other notable sales were the $75,000 for a chestnut, colt by Vice Regal from Panza (by Battle Waggon), a three-quarter sister to the outstanding New Zealand three-year-old and latterly a United States stakes winner Panza Chief.

Offered by Mr D. Williamson in the draft of Gressier Stud, Otaki, the colt was bought by prominent Malaysian trainer, Teh Choon Beng, a regular buyer at the Claudelands sales.

Ivan Allan, perennially Singapore’s leading trainer and an astute buyer, paid $67,500 for a brown colt by the high-class Zeddaan sprinter, Standaan, from the Danseur Etoile (by Lyphard) mare, Laquiola, offered on behalf of Dunhill Farm, Ohaupo, near Hamilton. The colt is from the family of last year’s stunning New Zealand Derby winner, Jolly Jake (by Three Legs), which Allan sold shortly after his classic success to the United States for a reported $1 million.
