Winners of Harkness Fellowship
PA Wellington An Auckland journalist, Mike Field, and a Wellington electrical engineering specialist, Dr Murray Milner, are this year’s winners of Harkness Fellowships. Financed by the Commonwealth Fund, an American foundation established in New York in 1918, the fellowships are awarded annually for 12 to 21 months study and travel in the United States. Up to five fellows from New Zealand and Australia are chosen each year. Previous winners include the broadcaster, Ms Sharon Crosbie, the Middlemore Hospital superintendent, Dr Karen Poutasi, and the Treasury head, Mr Bernie Galvin. Mr Field, the “Sunday News” deputy editor and news editor, plans to go to Harvard University in September. He will be away 21 months studying America’s defence policies, including the A.N.Z.U.S. Treaty. Mr Field, aged 32, said Harvard’s research opportunities could not be bettered and the experience would be invaluable. Dr Milner, aged 31, of Wellington, is supervising engineer (international) with the Post Office. He is a key figure in the planning and installation of satellite equipment. He will be away 21 months from September looking at the development of satellite communications in the United States with their ap-, plication to New Zealand in the 19905.
