Fewer move to Israel

NZPA-Reuter Jerusalem Immigration to Israel has fallen to its lowest annual level since the Jewish State was created in 1948, according to official statistics. Some 11,298 immigrants arrived last year, 41 per cent-fewer than in 1984, said the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption. The 1984 figure included about 8000 Ethiopian Jews, or Falashas.

A further 2035 Ethiopians arrived in January last year after being secretly flown from refugee camps in Sudan. Immigration from the Soviet Union last year stood at 342, nearly the same figure as 1984, the Ministry said. Just over 1000 Jews are believed to have left the Soviet Union in 1985, most travelling to the United States.
