Projects await decision
PA Hamilton Two big Electricity Division projects are being held in limbo while the Government decides on allocation of Maui gas. If the Government decided to leave_the gas in the ground or to turn it into liquefied natural gas, a proposed natural gas pipeline from Huntly to the Marsden B power station near Whangarei would be shelved. As well, the proposed new Waikato coal-fired power station near Meremere could be deferred up to two years if more gas was allocated to the Electricity Division for power generation.
The Electricity Division’s senior power development engineer, Mr Brian McGlinchy, said that if more gas was not allocated for power generation, Marsden B
would be converted from oil to burn coal instead of gas. Since its completion in 1978, the station has been mothballed because of high oil prices. Mr McGlinchy said the
Ministry of Works and Development was proceeding slowly with preliminary studies for a gas pipeline to Marsden B. One possible pipeline route was across the Manukau Heads.
