M.O.T. calls for safer rafting

PA Wellington The Ministry of Transport has urged people to “do their homework” before going rafting. The number of rafting accidents during the Christmas holidays, some resulting in deaths, was regrettable, said the Deputy Secretary for Transport, Mr Tim Sanger. Individuals should take what safety steps they could before setting out, he said. “People should realise that white-water rafting is physically demanding and requires varying levels of skill, fitness and stamina, according to the river being negotiated. “I urge the public to do their homework before trying their hand at rafting.” It appeared novice rafters

were attempting rivers that were beyond them. The Ministry had also received information suggesting substandard equipment was being used. He urged people to check lifejackets, helmets and wet-suits carefully before setting off. Lifejackets and helmets should fit properly. Particular attention should be paid to securing them. A properly fitted and adjusted lifejacket and helmet could mean the difference between life and death in a rapid. “White-water rafting is an exciting and exhilarating experience, but it is one which can involve an element of risk,” he said.

“The public should use common sense, and check the equipment to minimise that risk to themselves.”
