‘Government using job cuts to fight inflation’
PA Auckland The Labour Government is using unemployment as a weapon to fight inflation, said Opposition backbencher, Mr Simon Upton. He said fears that thousands of workers would face the dole queue within two months confirmed that the Government was prepared
to let job losses force down inflation,
Employers have predicted .big lay-offs in industry, caused by what they claimed was pressure from rising costs, high interest rates and excessive wage settlements.
Mr Upton, the member of Parliament for Raglan and Opposition spokesman for science and technology, said the Government had shown no intention of intervening, indicating it would use unemployment as a mechanism to force down inflation.
He said a flexible, deregulated labour market would not have allowed high wage demands to fuel inflation and put jobs at risk.
