Watch dogs

Sir,—Would it be possible for local bodies to reduce the cost of dog registration for families, elderly persons, and folk who live alone. The only defence we have against intruders are our door and window catches, and these are not making us feel very secure. The night can be a lonely, frightening time when one is afraid of burglars. A person alone can afford to feed a dog and accept veterinary fees as insurance and peace of mind, but the money needed for registration is an extra burden and seems to be required to pay for stray animals. Surely pound costs and our rates help to meet that cost. If other readers think my idea is worth while, they could write to their councils asking for a better understanding of why we find our dogs a necessity, not a luxury. — Yours, etc., P. SUTHERLAND. January 10, 1986.
