Plea for protection of harriers

Sir,—Congratulations to the compassionate Cheviot farmer who rescued the four Australasian harrier chicks pictured on the front page of “The Press” on January 8, and to the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve for adopting them. I hope the chicks will survive to fledgling and when released, get on with the good work of helping to rid the land of rabbits and vermin. Sad to say, the harrier is one of the few still unprotected native birds in this country persecuted by some misguided farmers and sportsmen because of the belief that it kills young lambs and game birds. Along with our wonderful alpine parrot, the kea — another muchmaligned and persecuted bird only partially protected — the harrier should be afforded full legal protection.—Yours, etc., K. C. HARRISON. January 8, 1986.
