Wellington v. Kiwis rugby match

Sir,—As an admirer of Johnny Simpson and the Kiwis in general, it was good to see Johnny fit and featuring in “The Press,” but it is surely time someone challenged that oft-repeated report that Wellington reneged on an agreement to play an open game against the kiwis. As a Wellington player that day, I can say that the team knew nothing of any such agreement and it is beyond my imagination to believe that Alex McDonald was a party to it. Except for the Bar-narian/Harlequin-type encounters, I know of no self-respecting teams which have settled in advance on a style of play or deliberately agreed to play to an opponent’s strength. Commentators and critics are wel-

come to debate whether the Kiwi loss to Wellington set New Zealand rugby back, as Winston McCarthy claimed, but “reneging” never. Try to picture Alex Wyllie agreeing to virtually throwing one of his matches.—Yours, etc., K. G. (“RED”) ELLIOTT. January 9, 1986.
