Health service
Sir, — The proposal by a member of the New Zealand Medical Association, that all hospital patients be means tested, and those able to afford it, directed to private hospitals and private practi-
tionerg id outrageous. Why should New . Zealanders, already .taxed hundreds.of millions of dollars a year, for “free” medical care, have •to pay for-hospital treatment, not .to'mention the $l2 or $l3 a visit ' they are charged' each ■ time 'they visit- a doctor? I suggest that the whole health scheme be scrapped and a State health service set up. As for the contention that' our most able, graduates, go overseas because of poor pay, let. us adopt the American system, where, if a student receives financial help, he repays it oh graduation. Alternatively, we could consider the Russian way where university education is free, but the graduate cannot leave the country without repaying the whole cost of his education. — Yours, etc., S. L. DONALDSON. January 8, 1986.
