Industrial strikes
Sir, — I have heard some stupid comments about industrial strikes which have been necessary to support wage claims — comments such as “senseless and ill-timed and counter-productive.” Let us get some points clear. Except on rare occasions, any strike action is decided on only when all else has failed. Strike action is decided democratically by a majority vote in a secret ballot. To strike is not only a worker’s ultimate weapon, but his onfc weapon against being taken unfair advantage of. All
strikes are “counter-productive” by their very nature. Not only are they meant to be; but must also' be at a time when they will have their greatest effect. 'lnstead of criticising the unfortunates who fin'd themselves. in a position where they have to withdraw from their source of income, some' people should put themselves .in the workers’ shoes, striking or otherwise, and imagine what, it feels like. — Yours, etc., •
