Heseltine quits
The British Defence Minister, Mr Michael Heseltine, who has been fighting a lone battle over the future of Westland, Britain’s only helicopter maker, said yesterday that he had resigned from the Cabinet. Mr Heseltine, aged 52, had gone to a Cabinet meeting hoping to convince his colleagues that he was justified in fighting to push forward a European Aerospace Consortium deal to rescue the troubled helicopter firm.
