Auck. women win softball
PA Hastings Auckland played tight softball to win the national under-18 women’s tournament at Hastings yesterday. Brilliant batting from Josephine Rush, and fast, intelligent pitching from Fiona Timu, forged a 4-0 win for Auckland over the tournament favourite, Hutt Valley. Rush hit the first pitch of the final into deep centrefield, and was scored with Angela Bird to give Auckland a 2-0 lead. This was increased in the second innings, when Rush again hit safely to make third base, and was scored by the next batter. Auckland scored its fourth run in the final innings, when Rush hit through centrefield for the third time in four turns at bat to score Kay Pomare.
