Arson in Kaiapoi
Three young men will appear in the District Court in Christchurch this morning charged with the arson of a house at 218 Williams Street, Kaiapoi, on the evening of January 1. The men, aged 18, 20 and 22, were arrested by the Rangiora police yesterday. They are now in custody. Several Kaiapoi residents had helped the investigation,
said Detective D. J. Cartwright. The Kaiapoi Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to the house twice.
They contained the fire in the lounge the first time and left — only to be recalled to the house well ablaze.
It is believed the second fire started under a bed in a bedroom beside the lounge.
